EU Projects Manager – European Cancer Organisation (ECO)

Job Objective  

The European Cancer Organisation (ECO) is looking for an ambitious, energetic and enthusiastic EU Projects Manager to work on a full-time basis, based in Brussels.
The role will also require regular collaboration with the Policy, Operations and Communications Teams, as well as regular contact with our Focused Topic Networks, project partners and external stakeholders.
The working language of the organisation is English.
The EU Projects Manager will already be living in Brussels and will report to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO).  Some home working and business travel is anticipated in this role.  This is a new role and subject to the success of EU funding applications, we anticipate that this EU Projects Manager will lead a small team within the organisation.

About the Organisation European Cancer Organisation (ECO)

The European Cancer Organisation is a not-for-profit federation of 40 Member Societies working in cancer at a European level, together with 20 European Patient Advisory Committee members through nine Focused Topic Networks.
The Mission of the European Cancer Organisation is to reduce the burden of cancer, improve outcomes and the quality of care for cancer patients, through multidisciplinarity and multiprofessionalism.
As the not-for-profit federation of member organisations working in cancer at a European level, the European Cancer Organisation convenes oncology professionals and patients to agree policy, advocate for positive change and be the united voice of the European cancer community.

Primary Responsibilities 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Lead the drafting, bidding and follow-up of all on-going and prospective EU projects (Horizon Europe, EU4Health, and other EU funding mechanisms)
  • Work closely with the Head of Policy and his team on the content of all funding applications
  • Lead on budgets, EU reporting and financial reporting for EU projects
  • Coordinate and manage diaries to organise (virtual and physical) meetings and events,  handling event logistics in collaboration with the Operations team
  • Meticulously retro-plan projects to ensure deadlines and milestones are met
  • Prepare agendas and record action points during meetings for distribution to stakeholders
  • Prepare slides/presentations for meetings
  • Effective written and verbal communication with stakeholders, responding quickly to enquiries and maintaining accurate records
  • Create and work collaboratively with team on Microsoft SharePoint files
  • Monitor and scan future funding opportunities for the ECO, its Member Societies and Focused Topic Networks
  • Mentor and train colleagues in EU funding bid preparation and project management
  • Potentially, if funding applications are successful, lead a small team of project officers

General Skill Specifications 

Previous experience is required in managing projects, preferably relating to EU Projects funding applications and delivery.
The candidate is expected to be computer and internet literate with proven experience in using Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams and Word). Native or near-native level written and spoken English, with other European languages being an advantage.  Communication and design skills will be highly valued.
The candidate should be a flexible, collaborative and positive team member who accepts additional tasks and responsibilities as directed by the CEO.

The role requires: 

  • Ability to lead and coordinate meetings with Member Societies, our Patient Advisory Committee and other volunteers and experts for productive outcomes.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritise several items that all require varying degrees of urgency
  • Aptitude to maintain calm when confronted with unforeseen circumstances
  • Being able to maintain a professional and friendly attitude, keeping the reputation of the European Cancer Organisation into consideration at all times
  • University degree and a keen interest in the success of EU Projects in the cancer domain, with previous healthcare experience being an advantage
  • Strong organisational, communication and inter-personal skills with effective and efficient writing skills in English (native or near-native level)
  • Ability to work both independently, problem solve, think critically and have excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Be a team player able to follow internal and external workflows with precise deadlines
  • Proactively follow-up on pending tasks
  • High level of discretion to maintain confidentiality of information
  • Outgoing and professional attitude

Profile and Experience 

  • Working in a fast-paced environment, the candidate needs to be readily available in case of urgent requests
  • Flexibility and adaptability are key aptitudes for this profile
  • Computer and internet proficiency with interest in developing IT-related skills are an advantage
  • Experience in EU Affairs, Policy and/or communication are desirable
  • A “completer-finisher”, who is not afraid to pick up the phone and proactively make things happen
  • Experience working with experts who are volunteering their time with a mission focus
